Besides the standard foam, fleece, fur, glues and thread that are required for other puppet building, these are some of the supplies you will also need for arms. These are primarily used to make professional arm rods:
2mm Insulation hanging wire or 3/32″ welding wire or 3/32″ piano wire for arm rods, 1/2″ (12mm) dowel rod, thin floral wire, flexible aluminum splinting material (link provided for Amazon), 1″ PE foam cylinders for arm “bones” (Amazon link provided), 2 part epoxy, wire cutter, drill, 3/32 or 2mm drill bit, band or hand saw or chop saw to cut dowel rod to length, heat gun, heat shrink tubing, gaffer tape, heavy duty pliers, bench vise, sewing machine (optional), shoe lace, 2 spring cord locks. If you are new to puppeteering, and do not want to manipulate the arms as a part of your performance, you can skip all these extras and have arms with no rods at all. This is a professional series pattern, but you can make it to suit your puppeteering needs and experience by omitting the rods. If you omit the rods, the only extras you will need are the PE foam cylinders or polyfil, gaffer tape, a shoe lace, and 2 spring cord locks. You’ll need the flexible aluminum if you want the fingers to bend and pose, but an alternative is suggested if this material is not available to you.
